Athens (Eleftherios Venizelos) airport to central Athens and Piraeus: bus, train, taxi or transfer

Option Cost Time Best for
Metro line 3 €9 single, €16 return (some 2026 sources: €10) ≈ 40 min to Syntagma Central hotels near Syntagma or Monastiraki, by day
Express bus X95 €5.50 60–90 min to Syntagma The cheapest ride, and the only bus that runs all night
Express bus X96 €5.50 ≈ 90 min to Piraeus port Ferry connections on a budget, if you have time
Taxi, flat fare €40 by day, €55 from midnight to 5:00, to the centre 35–50 min Two to four people to a central address
Pre-booked transfer from €48 per car (Kiwitaxi, 21 October 2026) ≈ 1 h 15 min Late arrivals, children, heavy luggage, groups

Athens airport is about 30 km east of the centre, and every option is honest about it: the metro is quick, the bus is cheap, and the taxi has a published flat fare. A booked car is worth it mostly for Piraeus and the ferries, for the Athens Riviera, and when you land after midnight.

The terminal

Eleftherios Venizelos has one terminal building with a main and a satellite pier. Arrivals, the metro and suburban rail station, the bus stops and the taxi rank are all a short walk from each other.

Metro and bus

Metro line 3 runs from the airport to Syntagma and Monastiraki in about 40 minutes, but airport trains are only every 30 minutes or so and stop running around midnight. Several 2026 guides quote €9 for a single airport ticket, others €10 — check the machine.

The X95 bus goes to Syntagma around the clock for €5.50. It is slow in traffic but it is the only public option after the last train. The X96 goes to Piraeus for the same fare; with a ferry to catch, allow a good 90 minutes.

Taxi: the flat fare

Athens taxis from the airport charge a flat €40 during the day and €55 between midnight and 5:00 to the city centre, tolls included. Settle the fare before you set off if the driver mentions the meter. For two people or more the day fare is often cheaper than the metro.

Where a transfer wins

  • Piraeus for an island ferry, with a fixed pick-up time and no X96 or metro change.
  • The Athens Riviera — Glyfada, Vouliagmeni — and Rafina or Lavrio ports, outside the flat-fare zone.
  • Night arrivals: the night taxi fare and a booked car come out close, and the car is already waiting.

Our take

  • Alone, by day, to Syntagma — metro.
  • On the tightest budget, or after midnight with no money for a taxi — X95.
  • Two to four people to the centre by day — flat-fare taxi.
  • Ferries, the coast, late arrivals, groups — book the transfer.

Frequent questions

How much is a transfer from ATH to Athens?

On 21 October 2026 the lowest price in Kiwitaxi's form was €48 per vehicle for 45 km, about 75 minutes on the road. The final price depends on your date, vehicle class and party size — the form shows it before you pay.

What if my flight to ATH is delayed?

The driver tracks the flight by its number and arrives for the actual landing. Kiwitaxi includes 90 minutes of free waiting at the airport.

Where does the driver meet me?

In the arrivals hall of Athens (Eleftherios Venizelos), holding a sign with your name on it. The driver's contact details arrive in advance, usually the day before the trip.

Is the price final?

Yes. Tolls and airport parking are already included. You only pay extra for options you choose yourself: a child seat, oversized luggage.

Can I cancel a booking?

With Kiwitaxi, cancellation is free up to 16 hours before pickup for standard cars and minivans, and up to 24 hours for business class and minibuses. The exact terms are shown at checkout.

Why is this better than a taxi at the rank?

The price is known upfront and does not depend on traffic or the time of day, the car is already booked, and the driver is waiting for you specifically. In an unfamiliar city, with luggage in hand, that is noticeably calmer.
