Rome (Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino) airport to Rome city centre: bus, train, taxi or transfer

Option Cost Time Best for
Leonardo Express train €14 32 min non-stop to Termini Hotels near Termini, travelling light or alone
FL1 regional train €8 ≈ 30–45 min to Trastevere, Ostiense, Tiburtina Trastevere and the south-west; does not stop at Termini
Airport coach ≈ €6–7 50–70 min to Termini, traffic permitting The cheapest seat if you are not in a hurry
White taxi, fixed fare €55 per car inside the Aurelian Walls 40–50 min Two to four people to a hotel in the historic centre
Pre-booked transfer from €106 per car (Kiwitaxi, 21 October 2026) ≈ 29 min Late arrivals, children, heavy luggage, groups

For a hotel inside the old city walls, the cheapest door-to-door option from Fiumicino is not a booked transfer but Rome's fixed taxi fare. We say so plainly, even though it is not something we earn from. A transfer makes sense outside the walls, for the cruise port at Civitavecchia, and for groups that need a minivan.

Terminals

International and long-haul flights arrive at Terminal 3, most Schengen flights at Terminal 1. Both are a covered walk from the airport railway station and from the taxi ranks.

Trains and coaches

The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Termini every 15 minutes, roughly from early morning until about 23:30. It is fast and simple, but Termini is a transport hub rather than a destination — from there you still need the metro, a bus or a taxi.

The FL1 regional train is cheaper and stops at Trastevere, Ostiense and Tiburtina, but not at Termini. Several coach companies run to Termini for around €6–7; they are the cheapest seat but sit in the same traffic as everyone else.

Taxi: the fixed fare

Licensed white Rome taxis charge a flat €55 per car from Fiumicino to any address inside the Aurelian Walls — luggage and supplements included, for up to four passengers. Outside the walls the meter applies. Use only the official rank outside arrivals; drivers who approach you inside the terminal are not licensed.

Where a transfer wins

  • Civitavecchia, Rome’s cruise port, is about 70 km away; a car straight to the ship avoids a train change with luggage.
  • Hotels outside the walls — EUR, the coast, the north of the city — where the taxi runs on the meter.
  • Five or more people: a taxi takes four, a booked minivan takes everyone.

Our take

  • Alone or as a couple, hotel near Termini — Leonardo Express.
  • Two to four people inside the walls — the €55 taxi beats a booked car.
  • Cruise port, big group, or outside the walls — book the transfer.

Frequent questions

How much is a transfer from FCO to Rome?

On 21 October 2026 the lowest price in Kiwitaxi's form was €98 per vehicle for 36 km, about 80 minutes on the road. The final price depends on your date, vehicle class and party size — the form shows it before you pay.

What if my flight to FCO is delayed?

The driver tracks the flight by its number and arrives for the actual landing. Kiwitaxi includes 90 minutes of free waiting at the airport.

Where does the driver meet me?

In the arrivals hall of Rome (Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino), holding a sign with your name on it. The driver's contact details arrive in advance, usually the day before the trip.

Is the price final?

Yes. Tolls and airport parking are already included. You only pay extra for options you choose yourself: a child seat, oversized luggage.

Can I cancel a booking?

With Kiwitaxi, cancellation is free up to 16 hours before pickup for standard cars and minivans, and up to 24 hours for business class and minibuses. The exact terms are shown at checkout.

Why is this better than a taxi at the rank?

The price is known upfront and does not depend on traffic or the time of day, the car is already booked, and the driver is waiting for you specifically. In an unfamiliar city, with luggage in hand, that is noticeably calmer.
